About Durango

Let me introduce you to Durango!

Durango is located in the Animas River Valley and surrounded by two million acres of the San Juan National Forest, in the Southwest corner of Colorado. We enjoy the desert southwest and the mountains to the north.  This is where Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and Colorado connect.  Nature creates a playground of pine forests, aspen groves, lakes streams and spectacular views around Durango.

Durango is situated below the La Plata Mountains and the San Juan Mountains at about 6500 feet in elevation. We enjoy mostly dry, moderate climate throughout the year.  Elevation makes a huge difference in the climate for Durango.  If you decide to build your home within the mountains at 8,000 feet in elevation or higher, expect cooler mountain air in the summer months and more snow and winter conditions in the winter months, typically from December through March.  In the lower elevations, (below 8,000 feet), you can expect mild winters and warm summers.

Durango is the regional hub for commercial businesses within the city and population of about 20,000.  The total county population grows to about 55,000 residents.  We are home to a four-year Libral Arts College, a regional medical facility, commercial airport and a wide variety of boutiques, specialty shops, galleries and many great restaurants.

Did I mention tourism?  We have the historic Durango to Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, Mesa Verde National Park and the ski area of Durango Mountain Resort. The railroad, built in the 1800's is the 50 mile journey by rail to the beautiful mountain community of Silverton. Don't miss it!  And then Mesa Verde National Park to the west is a collection of prehistoric cliff dwellings and artifacts that should not be missed! And we must not miss the Resort ski area to the north.  With unbelievable views, this ski area hosts lots of beginner and expert slopes, just waiting for the snow!

      Durango is an awesome community!
